Do-it-Yourself Enclosure Design and Build
Begin by selecting an small enclosure at least 12" deep for most industrial applications. Various sizes are listed bottom of Saginaw page.

Next select a Fused Disconnect. Remember the current rating will likely be the sum of the breakers you have chosen.

Code requires a UL489 breaker to protect each power component. Eaton offers the widest variety of breakers that we found. Each breaker is sized for max Inrush or rated max current draw, which ever is largest. Select # of poles for each device. Thermal magnetic overcurrent protection: three levels, categorized by B, C and D curves in direct relation to continuous rating of the device
B curve magnetic trip point: 3 to 5 times the rated current, typically used
for computers and electronic loads with very low inrush currents (PLC wiring).
C curve magnetic trip point: 5 to 10 times the rated current, typically used
for small transformers, pilot devices, etc. D curve magnetic trip point: 10 to 20 times the rated current, typically used
for transformers or devices with very high inductive loads.
A communications interface is often required for sealed enclosures.

All wires begin or terminate on a terminal block. We recommend ferrules and labels be used for each wire. Personal preference is for 2 tier blocks.

A 24V Power supply is required for most industrial enclosures. This is not a good area to save money. A supply should have sufficient inductance to ride through a brown-out and always maintain clean DCV for control components. Remember all control is 24 VDC. Inductive loads like 48 DCV powered Servo or Step motors require a switched supply exhibiting large inductance to absorb current spikes.

MTW Wire (UL 1028 / 1283 / 1284) is the preferred wire for enclosure builds. Stranded wire retains its shape when bent. This makes for a neat and precise appearance. Colors follow the old resistor color code sequence:
- 0 Black - 5 Green
- 1 Brown - 6 Blue
- 2 Red - 7 Violet
- 3 Orange - 8 Gray
- 4 Yellow - 9 White

Area Scanner
A light beam is emitted that continuously scans 270 degrees from the scanner horizontally or vertically. Areas are programmed as Safe, Warning or Guarded.

Area Radar
Instead of a line scan, Radar protects a 3D area. When motion is sensed within the area the machine is switched to a safe state.. Category 3, PLd protection.

Rope Pull Switches
A Rope Pull is to be used along conveyors or long machines. When properly tensioned a pull or a break will trigger the safety function. Lesser brands will exhibit temperature fluctuation faults, since mechanical spring tension will vary.
